Universal Machines – 5-Axis Machining for Everyone

The Haas 5-Axis Universal Machining Centre has changed the landscape of the machine tool industry. It has made 5-axis machining simple, affordable, and undoubtedly accessible to everyone.

Two machines in one

The Haas UMC-1500-DUO is like having two machines in one. A powerful 5-axis universal machining centre is combined with a versatile 3-axis vertical machining centre. We took our industry-leading UMC-750 and then expanded its X-axis travel. Furthermore, we added a stationary T-slot table next to the dual-axis trunnion.

Use the stationary table to set up workholding for first operations. The stationary table and trunnion platter are at the same height, so you can fixture parts across both. This allows you to use the machine’s full X-axis travel to machine long parts.

  • 5-axis simultaneous machining
  • Powerful inline direct-drive spindle
  • Dual-axis trunnion table
  • Stationary 813 mm x 457 mm T-slot table
  • Includes Wireless Intuitive Probing System
  • Made in the USA

The UMC-1500-DUO features a large stationary T-slot table on the left. This allows rigid setups for heavy material removal operations by using standard table vices. Another key point, there is enough room on the table to accommodate two vices. Moreover, the stationary table is also perfect for setting up first operations and machining the 6th side of your completed 5-axis parts.

The dual-axis trunnion features standard T-slots together with a precision pilot bore for versatile fixturing.

DWO/TCPC Changes Everything:

Dynamic Work Offsets (DWO) and Tool Centre Point Control (TCPC) are software features in the Haas control. The features make setting up 4-axis and 5-axis jobs as easy as setting up a 3-axis machine. An operator can place the part and fixture anywhere on the machine’s table or platter. They can do this regardless of the location programmed in the CAM system. DWO and TCPC determine the difference between the centres of rotation programmed in the CAM system and the centres of rotation within the machine and apply appropriate offsets.

  • Simplifies setup operations
  • Part and fixture can be placed anywhere on the table/platter
  • Saves money by eliminating costly workholding
  • No need to regenerate programs from the CAM system
  • Makes setting up 5-axis jobs as easy as setting up a 3-axis machine
  • Includes the Rotary Axis Calibration Tool

UMC-1500-DUO Cutting Demo

Check out this demo of the UMC-1500-DUO’s abilities.

Note: In case you notice the coolant stream seems pretty light in some places: To clarify, we planned it that way to have the cut more visible.

How We Build VMCs Today

Back in the late 1980s we started building our first VMC, the VF-1.

Today, our process is finely tuned and extremely efficient for a machine that is still hand built to a great extent. Take a look at how we build the same VF that may be sitting on your shop floor not too long from now.
